How to Hack Your Wii

How I discovered how to do this:

Wii all love the Wii. (get it?) But some of us, like me, want to modify it. Create our own games for it. Hack it. Turn it into a computer, stuff like that. But we can’t. Then, one day, I was looking for Wii simulators on Scratch, and I came across a project titled “How to hack your Wii”. It looked interesting, so I clicked on it. It was interesting, so, three years later, in 2023, I got into game console emulation. I don’t know how it happened, but suddenly I was on Scratch, searching for that same project. Unfortunately, it is not available anymore. Too bad. Then I discovered a nice little wiki called WiiBrew. And that’s where this tutorial comes from.

Requirements:

A computer with an SD card reader (or a SD to USB dongle)

A Wii connected to the internet.

A wireless network for your Wii to connect to

An SD card (4GB Capacity or higher)

Go:

On your computer:

Insert the SD Card into the computer

Format your SD Card.

On your Wii:

Click the Wii button in the bottom left corner of your screen

Select Wii Settings.

Look for the Wii Software version in the top right corner

It should be followed by a letter. In the US, It’s U.

If the version is lower than 4.3, please upgrade your Wii.

In Wii Settings, click “Internet”.

Select “Console Information”.

Make note of the MAC address!

Shut down your Wii.

On your computer:

Go to Please HackMii.

Select the System menu version (U, E, J, or K.)

Be sure “Bundle the HackMii installer for me” is checked.

Enter the MAC address of your Wii.

Complete the CAPTCHA.

Cut either wire.

Insert the SD card in your computer (if not inserted already) and extract the .zip file downloaded to it.

Eject the SD card.

On your Wii:

Insert the SD card.

Power on your Wii

Click the Wii Message board

Look for the LetterBomb Icon (the one you saw on Please HackMii) and click it.

A scam warning will appear. Wait 30 seconds for the “press 1 to continue” to appear at the bottom of the screen.

When you are at the HackMii Installer, use the D-Pad to select “Install the Homebrew Channel” and press A.

Press continue when done.

Press “Back”

Select “BootMii”

Select “Install BootMii as IOS” or, if it’s there select “Boot2” instead of “IOS”

Now we have to make a NAND backup.

If you couldn’t install BootMii, read these instructions, then come back here.

Exit the HackMii installer.

Shut down your Wii but don’t eject the SD.

If you installed BootMii as boot2:

Start up your Wii.

If you have BootMii installed as an IOS:

Open the Homebrew Channel

Press the HOME Button.

Select “Launch BootMii”

When BootMii is running, put down your Wiimote. You have to use the power button to navigate the BootMii menus!

Select the settings button (the one with the gears)

Select BackupMii

A NAND Backup will start. Sit back, relax, and watch the progress.

If you see some text like “Factory bad block 3736”, ignore it.

To exit, press the arrow button.

Press the Wii Menu (or homebrew channel) button.

On your computer:

Download Priiloader

Extract the downloaded file to the root of the SD Card.

On your Wii:

Launch the homebrew channel

Select the Priiloader installer

Press the + button

Hold the RESET button while turning on your Wii.

You should see the Priiloader Menu.

Using your Wiimote, press System Menu Hacks.

Adjust the settings so they look like this:

Save the settings.

Press Homebrew Channel

Power off your Wii.

On your computer:

Go to Open Shop Channel’s website and download the wii version.

Extract the downloaded .zip file to the Apps directory on the SD card. If there is no Apps directory on the SD Card, then create one.

Eject the SD card (safely.)

Insert the SD into your Wii.

Power on your Wii.

On the Wii:

Go to the Homebrew Channel.

The Open Shop Channel should be one of the options!

Enjoy!
